Corpedia uses auto-detection routines to check trainees’ browsers for the Adobe Flash plug-in, JavaScript and cookies. If any of these is neither present nor active, we redirect the trainee to an error page and offer specific instructions.
In rare instances, Corpedia is unable to support computer systems that require certain programs which interfere with the normal operation of the Adobe Flash plug-in and the web browser.
▲ Adobe Flash and browser manufacturers may, from time to time in the future, be updated. It is possible that Licensee may install and use an updated version of Adobe Flash player or their browser that is incompatible with the Corpedia course(s). Corpedia recommends that Licensee notify Corpedia if Licensee’s end-users upgrade their systems, in particular, the Adobe Flash player or their browser so that Corpedia may take reasonable steps to mitigate any incompatibilities.
Running a Corpedia Course
How do I login and run a Corpedia course?
To login and run a Corpedia course, simply point your browser to the training login page (http://www.corpedia.com/welcome/login.asp). From there, enter your Username, Password, and Company Login Name and click the Login button. If you do not have all of this information, click the Forgot Password button on the login page to have it e-mailed to you. Upon successful login, you will be presented with your personalized training menu containing the courses for which you are currently registered, and the courses which you have already completed. If you are a corporate user, keep in mind that your company or supervisor must first enroll you in a course before it shows up on your training menu. To run a course, click the start link next to the course.
Course Tracking
How does Corpedia track the course?
The Corpedia Training System tracks employee usage to ensure that employees have trained in their assigned courses. Training managers can track information such as where an employee logged on from (IP address), when they logged on, what time they viewed the company policy and custom content, what time they ended the course, and how they tested.
Required Browser
What kind of browser do I need to run a course?
The courses use a plug-in technology, Macromedia Flash, the industry standard for multimedia web delivery. To run a course you need:
- Internet Explorer 4.0 or above, or AOL 4.0 or above
- Flash 5 plug-in (or higher) for Netscape or the Flash 5 (or higher) control for Internet Explorer or AOL (Note: Only the Flash 5 (or higher) plug-in is required, not the entire Shockwave suite)
- JavaScript enabled
- Cookies enabledNote: Courses function under AOL versions 4 and higher but not version 3. Corpedia uses auto-detection routines to check your browser for the Flash 5 plug-in, JavaScript and cookies. If any of these are not present or turned on, you will be re-directed to an information page with specific instructions.Netscape is currently not supported by Corpedia.
Configuring Internet Explorer
If I am having trouble accessing the program, how do I configure Internet Explorer?
The most common installations of Internet Explorer have medium security settings that allow downloading and running of ActiveX controls. If your company network has strict security settings, it is usually best to have your Network Administrator or IT department deploy the Flash plug-in, company wide. If users are responsible for installing the plug-in themselves, they may have to reduce security settings to allow the installation of the plug-in. If users are restricted from changing the security settings in Internet Explorer, it is likely because the Network Administrator has the system locked. At this point, the user will have to contact the IT department or PC support to allow them access.
Here is how you can check security settings in Internet Explorer:
For Internet Explorer Version 4, go to the View menu and select Internet Options.
For Internet Explorer Version 5, go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
For Internet Explorer Version 6, go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
Under normal circumstances, the medium security setting enables all necessary functions. Under certain configurations, the user may be required to edit some of these settings.

To enable cookies, do the following:
- From the Internet Explorer main menu, click Tools, and then select Internet Options.
- Click the Security tab, and then click the Custom Level button.
- Set the button next to cookies to Enable.

Installing the Flash Plug-In
When I try to use the program, why am I having trouble installing the Flash Plug-In?
There is likely a security restriction that prevents you from downloading or installing the plug-in. You will likely have to have administrative privileges to install any software on the computer. Please contact your system administrator.
Sound Is Erratic
What can be done to correct choppy and erratic sound when viewing a course?
It is more than likely due to a slow Internet connection. Corpedia courses require a constant rate of about 3.5k/sec in order to stream the course to your computer. Faster connections allow your computer to download the course into temporary memory for smoother playback. Other Internet activity, such as downloading other files or checking for e-mail, can also interrupt the stream and cause problems. Make sure you avoid such Internet related activities if you experience problems and turn off your automatic e-mail check if enabled. If the sound is smooth but the presentation is choppy, this is most likely due to processor overload or lack of available memory. Make sure you do not have unnecessary applications open that require large amounts of memory or processor demands like database interfaces, word processing, spreadsheets, or other productivity software. Most web browsers create a heavy demand on the system by themselves, and Corpedia’s rich media content drives that demand even higher. While we do our best to make our courses user-friendly and widely available, a balance must be struck between usability, functionality, and quality content.
No Audio or Sound
What can be done if everything shows up fine but there is no audio/sound?
First, make sure your speakers or headphones are plugged securely into the correct jack in your computer and the power is turned on. Refer to your computer manufacturer’s documentation for instructions on how to do this. Next, make sure the volume level is turned up on your computer. For most Windows PCs, you can right click the speaker icon in the system tray and select “Open Volume Controls” from the sub-menu that opens up. Make sure the “Volume Control” and the “Wave” volume sliders are all the way up. Also, make sure the “Mute” boxes for both are not checked. Finally, if all these settings are OK , meaning your computer can produce sound from other applications or windows events, make sure you do not have another application running that would tie up the sound driver on the computer such as RealPlayer, Window Media Player, QuickTime or an MP3 Player.
AOL Compatibility
Can I use AOL to view courses?
Yes, our courses function under AOL versions 4, and up, but not version 3. You may encounter an occasional error message when using AOL, this is due to the proprietary nature of some AOL functions that conflict with the tracking system. However, the course does run, and it is properly tracked in the system.
Repeating Portions of the Course
Can I repeat portions of the course?
Each individual user may re-enter the course as often as they like for review and study.
Exiting and Resuming a Course
Can I take a course over a period of several days? If so, will the system pick up where I last left off?
Yes. Every course is divided into and tracked by chapters and sections. You may exit the course at any time and resume at a later date with the section where you last left off.
Login Problems
If I cannot login to take a course, how can I retrieve my password?
If there is an error message at the top of the login screen, it is possible some of the information you typed is incorrect. If you have forgotten your password, click the “Forgot your password? Click here to retrieve it!” link below the login box to have your correct login information e-mailed to you, or click here.
Course Does Not Start
I can log in to the training menu but why do I get a blank screen when I click on the “start course”?
If this is your problem, the first thing to do is to make sure you have the Flash 5 plug-in (or higher) installed on your browser. To test your browser, click the “click here to make sure that your browser is flash enabled” link. This should open a new browser window that will check to see if you are Flash 4 enabled. If the window says you are not Flash enabled, follow the instructions presented to install the plug-in.
The second thing to check is that two browser windows are present once you click start. The original window should turn gray and have “please do not close this window”written on it. The course itself should open in a second window on top of the previous. Sometimes, the training window can appear under the original window, you may have to check your taskbar (bottom of the screen on Windows computers) or minimize the original window to see if there is a second instance of your browser open.
Courses and Exams
Do all Corpedia courses have an exam the student takes at the end of the course?
NO. Not all courses are concluded with an assessment test. If the client has purchased “tracked” versions of courses, these test results will be viewable by the appropriate client HR administrator.
About Macromedia Flash
What is Macromedia Flash and why does Corpedia use it?
Macromedia Flash is the most commonly accepted “plug-in” for multimedia on the Internet and is distributed by Macromedia Corporation. Corpedia utilizes Macromedia Flash in order to make courseware that is both dynamic and interesting while still maintaining low bandwidth requirements. To get the same level of interactivity and dynamic content, other interactive software has much higher bandwidth requirements and require heavy plug-ins. Flash compresses audio and graphics associated with Corpedia’s programs into mathematical formulas which are downloaded and then reassembled on the users’ computer desktop, which allows for smaller downloads and higher end quality. The simple analogy is that Flash vs. Non-Flash internet-based programs are the difference between digital (Flash) and analog (non-Flash) television.
Flash System Requirements
What are the system requirements for Macromedia Flash Player 7?
Macromedia Flash Player 7 supports a broad range of platforms and browsers, including new browsers such as Safari 1.x. View the system requirements.
Available Flash Languages
In what languages is the Macromedia Flash Player available?
The Macromedia Flash Player is available in English, French, German, Japanese, Italian, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, and Traditional Chinese on most major browser platforms. Review the detailed listing of shipping platforms.
Flash Player, New Version Notification
I just received a dialogue box notifying me that a new version of Flash Player is available, what does this mean?
Periodically, Macromedia updates the Macromedia Flash Player with new features or fixes to minor problems. The Automatic Notification and Update feature allows Macromedia to automatically notify you when an updated version of the Macromedia Flash Player is available so that you can install it right away.
Updates to Macromedia Flash Player ensure that Flash Player works properly and may contain important changes to security. Macromedia recommends that you update to the latest version of Flash Player whenever a new version is available, especially when a security update is mentioned. Although you may choose whether or not to receive automatic notification of updates and how frequently to receive them, Macromedia is not responsible for errors or security problems that occur because the version of Macromedia Flash Player on your computer is not the most current version available. To specify notification settings, use the Global Notification Settings panel.
Security Dialogue Box Permission
I just received the security dialogue box asking permission to load data from another site, what should I do?
This question appears because the Flash application you are viewing is trying to access information from a site outside its own domain, using an older system of security. The Flash Player is alerting you that information might be shared between two sites and is asking if you want to allow or deny such access. Read more about the security pop-up.
Macromedia Flash Player Support
I am having trouble installing the Macromedia Flash Player. Where can I get support?
Visit Macromedia’s troubleshooting area in the Macromedia Flash Player Support Center for help with installation.
Testing Macromedia Flash Player
Where can I test my Macromedia Flash Player to make sure it is working correctly?
Macromedia provides online testing for the Macromedia Flash Player at their web players testing site.
Assessment Tests and Credits
Is a certain score or grade level needed on the assessment test to get credit for the course?
On some of our courses, To receive credit for the course, you must correctly answer each question. The course assessment tests are designed as a learning tool, every question missed is cycled and asked again at the end of the test until the student answers each correctly. This helps to reinforce correct answers. Certain suites that have certificates associated with them do have a scored test that you must pass to be granted the certificate.
Tablet PC Accessibility
Can I access the course on Tablet PC?
Corpedia does not officially support Tablet PCs at this time. There have been reports of Tablet PC users receiving a “Flash.ocx” error when using Internet Explorer. On some Tablet PCs, closing the application “tabtip.exe” in the Windows task manager has allowed the course to continue. We have also been successful in getting courses to run on Tablet PCs when using the Mozilla Firefox browser.
Problems at Startup
When I click start, why does nothing happen or I get a blank screen that displays, “loading”?
The problem is most likely a pop-up blocker. To allow the course to launch most pop-up blockers can be disabled by holding the “Ctrl” key and clicking start. If this does not work please disable the pop-up blocker.
Course Not Running
I left my computer and now the course is not running. How do I restart the course?
The course has most likely timed out. The course will time itself out after an extended period of time for security reasons. To reenter the course, close the window and log back in.
Course “Incomplete”
I paused or left the course at the end of a slide and finished the course but it still shows the course as incomplete. Did I actually finish the course?
The course has most likely timed out. The course will time itself out after an extended period of time for security reasons. You must finish the course from the last bookmarked spot to complete the training. To reenter the course, close the window and log back in.
